Apple, Grapes, Mangoes and More Fruit from Walmart Recalled Due to a Listeria Risk

We’ve seen all kinds of recall this year, from Christmas trees recalled for a potential fire hazard to frozen chicken nuggets recalled for containing rubber. Now, ready-to-eat fruit from Walmart including apples, grapes, mangoes and more have been recalled for a listeria risk.

This fruit recall issued by Country Fresh affects Walmart locations in nine states: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. You can find the full FDA statement here.

What fruits are recalled?

This fruit recall includes your lunchtime favorites, like apple slices, cantaloupe chunks, mango spears, red grapes and seasonal fruit mixes. Country Fresh, the manufacturer, issued the recall after Listeria monocytogenes was detected on equipment near where the products were packaged.

Walmart and Country Fresh are already removing the recalled fruit from stores. However, the FDA wants buyers to be aware of the potentially contaminated fruit in their refrigerators.

You can get ahead of pesky food recalls with this USDA recall app.

How do I know if I have this fruit?

This fruit recall only affects Walmart brands. The “Best If Used By” dates on all of these products are between October 3, 2020 and October 11, 2020. You can find each product’s UPC code and label on the FDA site—compare them to the fruit in your refrigerator.

I have this fruit! What should I do with it?

First, heed the advice of the FDA and dispose of recalled products ASAP. If you find some recalled fruit out in your fridge, discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Walmart may even offer an exchange for non-recalled fruit if you’re particularly concerned about contamination.

For any questions, you can contact Country Fresh’s Customer Service line at 877-251-8300 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central.

How can I avoid getting listeria?

Listeria is both dangerous and common, often living on non-pasteurized milk and soft cheeses, sprouts, melons and more. Before you buy, make sure all of your dairy products say “pasteurized” somewhere on the label. Hot dogs and other packaged meats should only stay in the fridge for two weeks if they’re sealed and only seven days if the package has been opened. You’ll also want to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before you eat them.

You can find our full listeria guide here. Please clean out your refrigerators ASAP!
