Using an App to Make a Reservation? You Might Have to Answer Questions About COVID-19

For people who enjoy going out to eat and sitting down at a restaurant for a meal, these past few months have been tough. Sure, gathering around the kitchen table with takeout is fun, but it doesn’t quite have the same atmosphere.

It stands to reason that people would be relieved to hear their favorite eateries are reopening. But it won’t be a full return to normal, so you might have to take additional steps before stepping inside.

Now, reservation apps might ask you questions related to COVID-19.

What Kind of Questions Will be Asked?

Plenty of restaurants use an app like Resy, OpenTable or Tock, which allow for customers to make reservations and ask dining questions ahead of time. Now, many of these apps say they’re planning to add coronavirus-related inquiries to their pre-meal questionnaires in order to help keep diners safe.

What types of questions might come up? Some won’t shock you. First, you might be asked if you’re experiencing symptoms, like a fever, cough, chills, etc. You might also need to disclose whether you’ve had close contact with someone diagnosed with the virus, or whether you’re awaiting coronavirus test results.

What Other Info Will You Have to Provide?

You might be surprised, however, to learn in some cases you’ll need to give phone numbers and names for everyone you’re eating with; not just the person making the reservation.

But don’t worry—no one’s snooping on you or preparing to make prank calls. Rather, that info is meant to aid in contact tracing, should anyone at your table later realize they were asymptomatic or had been exposed to the virus prior to your meal. Before you go, you’ll definitely want to read over these tips on how to avoid germs in restaurants. And if you’re wearing a face mask, here’s how often you should be washing it.

On the bright side, you might get to choose whether you eat inside or outside, which is nice! And once you get home, it’s always a good idea to wash your hands. Here’s how to wash your hands the right way.
