Uber Eats Is Dropping Delivery Fees on Orders from Black-Owned Restaurants

People across the US have been standing up in solidarity with protestors advocating for change. Plenty of food businesses around the nation are offering their support, too, like Ben and Jerry’s, Wendy’s and McDonald’s. Now, Uber Eats is stepping up. How?

Uber Eats is waiving delivery fees on orders from black-owned restaurants.

What’s Changing with Uber Eats

In an email to customers, Uber Eats said that it’s doing away with delivery fees to help out black-owned businesses in communities nationwide. What’s better is the promotion runs all the way through the end of the year, so if you want to show your support, you can enjoy a meal from a local black-owned restaurant for the rest of 2020.

On top of that, Uber will be discounting rides to black-owned businesses and donating $1 million to Equal Justice Initiative and Center for Policing Equity. Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber Eats, ended his email by saying, “We know this isn’t enough. It won’t be enough until we see true racial justice. But we plan to work day in and day out to improve, learn, and grow as a company.”

How Do I Place My Order?

Getting hungry? You can order—sans the delivery fee—right now. Just open your Uber Eats app and click the banner that reads: Support Black-Owned Restaurants. (This feature is only available in larger metro areas.) The app will give you a list of all the restaurants that need your support, and you can order food without shelling out that extra $4.99.

If you’re still not keen on answering the door face-to-face, make sure you select no-contact delivery on the billing screen. Don’t forget to support your Uber Eats drivers, and the businesses serving your meal, by tipping and leaving positive reviews. (That goes for grocery delivery, too!)
