Coca-Cola Is Changing Its Bottles in a BIG Way—Here’s What’s New

Last year, Coke kept things interesting by rolling out its crazy good Vanilla Coke Float and Strawberry Coke flavors. To start 2021 on the right foot, the brand finally released its much-anticipated Coke with Coffee.

The next release, however, doesn’t rely on fun flavors. Coca-Cola is rolling out brand-new packaging that’s designed to reduce plastic waste and use more recycled materials.

Will I Notice the Change?

Absolutely! You probably sip Coke from a 20 oz or 16.9 oz bottle right now. But Coca-Cola will be introducing a new “more sippable” 13.2 oz bottle. It’s significantly smaller, but made entirely out of 100% recycled plastic material (rPET).

If you can’t live without a full 20 oz Diet Coke, don’t worry. Coca-Cola is also making 20 oz 100% rPET bottles that will roll out in California, New York and Texas in the coming months.

Why the changes? The company is aiming to stick to its World Without Waste goals, where it pledged to make 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025 and use 50% recycled material in bottles and cans by 2030.

See what Evian and McDonald’s, along with other major companies, are doing to reduce plastic waste.

When Will the New Bottles Be in Stores?

The rollout will start with the company’s most iconic brands: Coke, Diet Coke and Coke Zero. The smaller 13.2 oz bottle will hit stores in Florida, California and a handful of other states right away this February. The 13.2 oz clear bottle will also roll out for Sprite this month in some areas, and the brand will transition to completely clear packaging by 2022. We’re sad to see Sprite’s signature green bottles go, but we’re fully in support of making recycling easier!

If you’re curious, Coca-Cola released their full timeline for all the environmentally-friendly packaging changes, which also includes their other brands like Dasani and Smartwater.
