Starbucks Is Releasing a Brand-New Milk Option in Spring of 2021

If you’ve been paying attention to non-dairy trends, you might’ve noticed oat milk is suddenly everywhere and giving almond and soy milks a run for their money. Big Brands took notice, and earlier this year, Dunkin’ added oat milk to the menu in the form of a brand-new Iced Oatmilk Latte.

Now, Starbucks is now about to follow Dunkin’s lead and introduce the buzzy plant-based milk we’ve been waiting for. Starbucks oat milk is about to hit stores nationwide! Here’s what we know so far.

Why Is Oat Milk So Popular?

Starbucks is carrying the new alternative milk because of popular demand. According to the coffee company, customer interest in plant-based foods has increased 29% over the past two years. That probably explains the addition of the Beyond Meat breakfast sandwich too. The coffee chain has always been slightly ahead of the curve; Starbucks debuted soy milk in 1997 and added almond milk to its menu in 2016.

Speaking of progress, in September of 2020, Starbucks announced they would be switching drinks like cold brews and teas to strawless sippy lids indefinitely. Kudos to you, Starbucks!

If you’ve never had it, oat milk is an alternative that contains no dairy, soy, nuts or gluten, so it’s perfect for vegan coffee-lovers, lactose intolerant individuals or anyone who simply doesn’t enjoy the taste of cow’s milk. Even milk drinkers can appreciate oat milk for its creamy texture and slightly sweet taste. See how oat milk compares to other non-dairy milks.

When Can We Order Oat Milk at Starbucks?

While it’s not going to be available this year, we’ll be seeing oat milk in stores as early as spring of 2021. If you’re thinking this is a case of déjà vu, yes, oat milk has already been available at select Starbucks stores in the Midwest. There was even an official Oatmilk Honey Latte over the summer that took full advantage of the ingredient—and earned itself some rave reviews. However, this is the first we’ve heard of a national roll-out, so be on the look out for it next year!
