How to Get Grease Off Walls in Your Kitchen

Practically everyone loves making bacon, but no one loves the pesky grease splatters it leaves behind. The grease from fried foods sticks to your walls and backsplash, then dust and grime stick to the grease, creating an even bigger mess. So, what’s a cook to do? Well, there’s no one simple solution for how to get grease off walls—which is why we’re sharing three.

Here’s a closer look at the best store-bought, DIY and natural grease-cutting secrets.

Best Natural Method for Cleaning Grease Off Walls

We turned to the cleaning experts at Merry Maids for this one: their favorite natural degreaser for walls and backsplash tile is a lemon. Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a measuring cup and pour it into a spray bottle, being careful to avoid pulp and seeds. Then, spray onto grease and let sit for a few minutes. Wipe off with a damp cloth and dry the surface with a clean towel. Like many natural solutions, lemon might not work on your toughest grease stains, but will be effective on new grease splatters.

Best DIY Method for Cleaning Grease Off Walls

For a quick grease-cutting recipe you can mix up on your own, we turn to baking soda. Make a paste using baking soda and warm water. Then use a sponge to apply the paste to the walls and scrub the grease away. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that works wonders on grease! (It’s also great for stained mugs.)

If you need a little extra cleaning power, add a few drops of dish soap and a little more water to the paste. Finish by wiping away any residue with a damp cloth.

Best Store-Bought Method for Cleaning Grease Off Walls

Sometimes you need to bring out the big guns. For stubborn built-up grease, a store-bought degreaser is the only way to go. Our favorite is Krud Kutter Kitchen Degreaser. Here’s what one five-star reviewer had to say: “Legit the greatest kitchen cleaner I’ve ever used! I always had trouble cleaning around the stove because the grease was so hard to clean off the wall. It would take…a lot of vigorous scrubbing, but with this I just sprayed, waited ten seconds and wiped with a paper towel. My new favorite kitchen cleaner!”

We’re sold. Next, learn how to clean a range hood that’s all greasy and dusty.
