Poultry Seasoning is an amazing salt free seasoning for chicken, stuffing, and so much more. With a delicious combination of dried herbs, this homemade spice blend tastes good in so many different dishes. Use it for this grilled chicken or chicken soup.
As chicken is considered to be the meat that goes with absolutely anything, it makes perfect sense that poultry seasoning is the spice blend that does the same!
This mouthwatering spice blend is a must have for every kitchen, and making it yourself is the best way to have it! When you make your own spice blends at home, you get to control the flavor and ingredients. No unnecessary sugar or preservatives - just a tasty spice blend you can use in all kinds of recipes.
What’s in Poultry Seasoning?
Poultry seasoning is a blend of sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, ground black pepper, celery seed, and nutmeg – you can use ground white pepper instead of black, if you prefer.
What I love most about this recipe is that it is completely salt free – the standard American diet is so high in sodium that I get really excited anytime I find a recipe that doesn’t have any in it!
How to Use Chicken Seasoning
Poultry seasoning is great sprinkled on chicken or turkey right before you put it in the oven, but that is by no means the only way you can use it. Dusted onto a prepared bird before roasting, it makes for mouthwatering skin if you like that sort of thing – or you can slide it between the skin and the meat so the flavor penetrates the meat as it cooks.
Even skinless, this seasoning is still just as amazing, and you don't have to stick to poultry to enjoy it – but more on that further down.
How Much Poultry Seasoning Do I Need?
Generally speaking, you will want to use 1-2 tablespoons per pound of chicken depending on how flavorful you like things. Use less seasoning for a mild taste and more to really pack in the flavor.
The same goes for using in soups, stews, or with roasted veggies. Just season to taste to add a delicious herbal flavor to any meal you are preparing.
Is it Vegan/Gluten Free?
Poultry seasoning is named the way it is because it was designed to pair well with chicken and turkey – you can even use it on ground pork – so you might think that it isn’t okay for vegans to eat.
But the seasoning itself is actually vegan, and it’s also gluten free, making it one of the most versatile spice blends to have in your cupboard! It is a common misconception that vegans can’t use poultry seasoning, but this is one of those times when the blend is named for what it is primarily used for, not what is in it.
So if you’re vegan or on a gluten free diet, feel free to use poultry seasoning to your heart’s content!
How Long Will Poultry Seasoning Last?
When you’re making seasoning mixes of any kind at home you always end up with more than you need, but don’t throw that extra seasoning away! You can safely store it for up to 6 months before it starts to lose its flavor.
The best container to store it in is a glass jar with a tight sealing lid, but you can also use plastic – I love saving old jars from store bought herbs and spices, as they do the job perfectly. In an airtight container, the poultry seasoning will survive for about 6 months before you see any change in color or taste, especially if you store it out of direct sunlight and away from anywhere that has a lot of moisture in the air, like near a kettle.
What Else Can I Use Chicken Seasoning For?
Just like the meats it was originally created to season, poultry seasoning is one of those seasoning blends that can be used in just about anything – in fact, owing to it being vegan, it can actually be used in more dishes than poultry can! However, if you’re looking for a few ideas of where else you can use your poultry seasoning, here are a few ideas you may enjoy:
- Turkey Meatballs: Blend into the meatballs before you form them to enhance the flavor of the meatballs.
- Stuffing: Makes a great base for the flavor of your stuffing. Feel free to add herbs, meat, or whatever else you’d like to have in your stuffing.
- Turkey Gravy: Added to turkey gravy, the poultry seasoning helps give the gravy a bright, bold flavor.
- Chicken Pot Pie: Poultry seasoning helps give the entire dish taste like every bite has meat in it, even when it doesn’t.
- Veggie Burgers: Adds a wonderful umami to your veggie burgers. Especially good for those who are just transitioning away from meat!
- Soups: If your soups come out tasting watery then poultry seasoning might be just the thing it needs as it gives any soup more body and makes it more flavorful.
