The Upside-Down Christmas Tree Needs to Be a Holiday Trend in 2020

With the Christmas season fast approaching, visions of sugar plums, wreaths and Christmas trees are dancing into view. It’s been a challenging year for many, so why not trim the tree early this year? If you’re ready to change up your holiday decorations, allow us to introduce you to… the upside-down Christmas tree!

What Are Upside-Down Christmas Trees?

Although the trend has gained steam over the past few years (as your Insta feed will confirm), the upside-down Christmas tree has been around for centuries. The tradition dates back to a 7th or 8th century legend about Saint Boniface. Upon seeing a group of pagans worshiping a large oak, he took an ax to the tree. In its place grew a fir, which Saint Boniface chopped down and turned upside down. He used the triangular shape to teach people about the Holy Trinity.

Later, in the 19th century, hanging Christmas trees from the ceiling was a common practice to help save space in small houses. Today, it’s an eye-catching way to put a new spin on your Christmas decor.

Why We Love Them

This kind of topsy-turvy tree makes a stunning centerpiece for your Christmas decorations—and of course, it’s perfect if you’re short on space. Because they’re suspended from the ceiling, you’ll have plenty of room for presents under the tree, not to mention room for a generous plate of Christmas cookies for Santa. It’s a spectacular way to show off decorations, especially if you’re baking up edible ornaments this year, and your kids will love the novelty of trimming an inverted tree.

Where to Buy an Upside Down Christmas Tree

If you want to jump on the upside-down Christmas tree trend, you’ll be thrilled to know there are plenty of places you can pick one up. Walmart has a range of upside-down trees to pick from, whether you prefer the classic green pine look or can’t get enough of a snowy white tree. The upside-down trees at Walmart also come in silver and gold, for something with a little more glitz! Wayfair also has a wide selection of upside-down trees or Amazon can deliver one.

It’s nearly time to start decking the halls with boughs of holly. If you need a lil’ inspo, check out our handy Christmas decorating guide.
