Although the trend has gained steam over the past few years (as your Insta feed will confirm), the upside-down Christmas tree has been around for centuries. The tradition dates back to a 7th or 8th century legend about Saint Boniface. Upon seeing a group of pagans worshiping a large oak, he took an ax to the tree. In its place grew a fir, which Saint Boniface chopped down and turned upside down. He used the triangular shape to teach people about the Holy Trinity.
Later, in the 19th century, hanging Christmas trees from the ceiling was a common practice to help save space in small houses. Today, it’s an eye-catching way to put a new spin on your Christmas decor.
