This Minneapolis Baker Is Helping Her Community Heal by Giving Away ‘Comfort Pies’

It’s not an easy time to be anywhere in the world right now, but it’s especially hard to be in Minneapolis. Protests over the murder of George Floyd have continued, some buildings in the city have been damaged by looting and on top of it all, COVID-19 is still around.

In spite of all the uncertainty, there’s still good news coming out of Minneapolis—like this incredible story of overwhelming food donations for students in need. Now, there’s another heartwarming tale to share: This baker is distributing “comfort pies” to those in need around the city.

Who Is This Baker—and What’s the Story?

Rose McGee and a team of volunteers have set up their kindness-distribution operation at Floyd’s makeshift memorial. Each person receives a sweet potato pie and a poem that encourages them to “eat, pray and love as they partake in making a difference.”

This isn’t the first time the 69-year-old baker has used her sweet potato pies to comfort a community in need. In 2014, McGee drove more than 500 miles to Ferguson, Missouri, which was reeling after the Michael Brown shooting, and distributed her “comfort pies” to those who were heartbroken and grieving.

She said each person she gave a pie to had a story about how it arrived at just the right time. The same is undoubtedly true for those receiving her pies in Minneapolis.

How Can I Help?

McGee has a website dedicated to her operation and its variety of outreach efforts, like holding a “Holiday of Service” to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy or helping Facebook Live fans learn the craft of creating sweet potato pies during the pandemic.

If you would like to donate to her operation or serve as a volunteer, you can do so on the Sweet Potato Comfort Pie website. And if all this reading about sweet potato pie has you ready to bake, check out this recipe.
