JCPenney Is Closing 154 Stores—Permanently

COVID-19 has completely changed the way most of us shop and eat. It’s hard to remember how things used to be pre-pandemic, though things are slowly starting to go back to normal.

But some retailers haven’t been so lucky. Stores like J. Crew, Neiman Marcus and JCPenney have recently filed for bankruptcy. In fact, JCPenney is about to permanently close down 154 stores, even as nearly 500 locations are reopening after coronavirus-related closures.

We’ve already said goodbye to Pizza Hut, Sears and Sam’s Club locations, so we hope this isn’t a trend that continues.

Is JCPenney Closing for Good?

It may be a possibility. In late May, the department store filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, then last week it announced the 154 store closures as part of a turnaround plan that’s expected to take 10 to 16 weeks.

These shutdowns will affect stores in 38 states throughout the country, with the most closures being in Florida, Ohio and Indiana at nine closures for each of those states. We’re sad to see the department stores close, because JCPenney is an excellent place to find deals on kitchen gear.

Is your local JCPenney closing? Here’s a list of the upcoming store closures.

How the Reopened Stores Will Be Different

This news comes right on the heels of JCPenney reopening stores that were temporarily closed due to the coronavirus. This reopening involves new safety precautions based on CDC guidelines, like requiring employees to wear masks and gloves, adding plexiglass shields at checkout counters and reminding shoppers about social distancing.

You may wonder what cleaning method is best for fighting germs like the coronavirus at home. Is simply wiping surfaces enough? This is how to clean your house, according to the CDC.
