Starbucks Is Giving Out Free Coffee to First Responders and Hospital Staff

A little bit can go a long way. That’s why Starbucks is saying thank you to first responders and healthcare workers by offering them a free coffee. While it may not seem like a lot, it’s sure to be a welcome pick-me-up and token of appreciation for those working long days.

How Does It Work?

Starting Wednesday, March 25, any customer who identifies as a first responder or frontline healthcare worker can grab a free tall coffee—hot or iced—from participating Starbucks nationwide. (If you’re new to Starbucks, here’s what those drink sizes really mean). This includes all police officers, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, hospital workers and medical researchers. Just make sure to head through the drive-thru, as Starbucks recently closed the sit-down portion of all of its cafes in the U.S. to help encourage social distancing.

The free coffee for first responders will be available until May 3.

Starbucks Is Giving Back In Other Ways, Too

Starbucks also announced in a statement that they will donate $500,000 to support U.S. front-line responders. That donation will go to Direct Relief to support the delivery of personal protective equipment and essential medical items and to Operation Gratitude to deliver 50,000 care packages and handwritten letters to first responders and health care workers.

During these difficult times, Starbucks has also committed to continue to pay all its employees for the next 30 days regardless of whether they come into work or their stores stay open. The coffee chain is paying those who are able and choose to work their scheduled shifts an additional $3 per hour. In a letter posted to the Starbucks website, the company explained that they want to lead by example during this time and don’t want employees to have to choose between their work and their health. It’s nice to hear that our favorite baristas are being taken care of.

Next up, check out these simple ways you can help your community right now.
