There’s a little bit of old, a little bit of blue and a whole lotta new. At least that’s what the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) reports in its annual lawn and landscape trends press release. Relying on the expertise of landscaping professionals, NALP annually predicts landscape design and functionality trends designed to inspire Americans.

2020’s Landscape Trends
“Foundational landscape elements remain on homeowners’ wish lists, but modern updates and technology are now a top priority,” says Britt Wood, chief executive officer of NALP. “With a wave of design and technical innovations, our members report that ornate hardscaping, contemporary features, lush gardens and smart irrigation are all trending and will influence landscape designs across the country in 2020.
“This year’s trends showcase how homeowners of all generations desire a striking, custom and well-maintained outdoor space that benefits their community and the environment.”
Psst…These backyard trends are worth a try, too.
Here are the five trends that will define outdoor spaces in 2020, according to NALP:
Intricate Interest
There’s a growing interest in intricate hardscaping patterns such as waves, chevron, lattice and basket weave. Landscape professionals report that homeowners want to integrate home décor patterns into hardscaping features such as walkways, patios, retaining walls and outdoor fire features.

K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple and sleek. That’s what Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials are telling landscape professionals. There’s a shift towards simple, more contemporary designs in outdoor kitchens, water features, sculptures, fire pits and more. Practicality is important, too. Homeowners are opting for native plants that can withstand extreme weather, as well as protective structures and heat lamps to extend their time outdoors.

Feeling Blue?
If you’re not, you soon will be—it’s the color of the year! Paint manufacturer PPG named Chinese Porcelain, a cobalt and moody blue, as its color of the year. Sherwin-Williams did the same with a calming dark blue called Naval. No wonder landscape professionals anticipate blue will make an impact in 2020. To add touches of the hue, NALP recommends homeowners consider blue garden art, sculpture or a blue water feature. They can also bring blue hues into the garden with plants such as grape hyacinth, larkspur, delphinium, hydrangea, globe thistle and cornflower, also known as bachelor’s buttons.
My Way
Personalization is the operative word. Today’s homeowner wants a garden that meets their specific needs, whether it’s a relaxing refuge from the rat race or an edible garden of organically grown fruits, vegetables and herbs to spur on healthier eating. Where space is tight, this personalization will carry over to containers and vertical gardens.

Tech It Out
Technology takes it outside. One of the places you’ll see it, NALP predicts, is with high-tech irrigation systems that conserve water and save money by delivering a precise amount of water to a lawn or landscape. Controlled from anywhere with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and smartphone apps, today’s newest irrigation systems are maximizing efficiency. One example is a smart sprinkler controller that works with Alexa.
