If you haven’t shopped for a dishwasher in a while, you might be surprised by how much has changed (Are you shortening the life of your dishwasher?). Brands like Bosch and KitchenAid have released new bells and whistles that are sure to make your dishes sparkle. Find out more about each new design (including the new drawer dishwasher) to see if they’re worth the price.
Third Rack Options
Unlike older double rack models, the newest dishwashers almost all include a third rack option. Miele claims to be the original designer of the cutlery drawer. This is a shallow third drawer at the top of the dishwasher that keeps all your spoons, knives and forks separated for optimal cleaning and drying.
If you want a few more options, you might want to try a Bosch dishwasher or KitchenAid. Bosch offers three different third rack designs. Our favorite is the “Flexible” third rack which features expandable wings and adjustable tines for fitting awkward items.
Interestingly, Bosch’s MyWay rack and KitchenAid’s FreeFlex rack claim to have the largest third rack on the market. Both can fit bigger items like mugs and bowls, in additon to cutlery. (Remember, there are some things that should never go in the dishwasher!)
The Dishwasher Drawer
If you’re interested in truly luxurious appliances that will make your neighbors jealous—check out Fisher & Paykel’s drawer-style dishwashers. Fisher & Paykel market their “DishDrawer” as a dishwasher that can be seamlessly integrated into your kitchen design, so it looks like any other cabinet drawer. The drawers can be configured side by side or stacked one atop the other.
Especially cool features include a sanitizing setting that kills 99.9 percent of bacteria. It also can run one drawer while loading the other, conserving water. One thing to keep in mind, Fisher & Paykel dishwashers come with a steep price—double drawer models range from $1,200 to $1,500.
What Users Say
Consumer reviews at Lowe’s were consistently positive for Fisher and Paykel drawer dishwashers. Many seemed to love the option to only run half a load, and they gave high marks for their low noise output. A few reviewers report loading the dishes can be difficult; as they only fit in specific configurations (check out these secrets for loading your dishwasher the right way).
Bosch three rack dishwashers also received good reviews. A Home Depot reviewer said, “The third rack is enough for an average day’s load of silverware, thus eliminating the need for the basket and this frees up space in the bottom rack for larger items.”
So if you’re looking to upgrade your dishwasher, these could be some worthwhile investments.
