Trader Joe’s Is Selling Plant-Based Burgers and We’re Already Planning Our Barbecue

2019 was the year of meat alternatives going mainstream at fast-food spots like Burger King and even McDonald’s. Now, it looks like grocery brands want in on the plant-based party.

Trader Joe’s just announced the launch of its plant-based burgers!

This Is What You Need to Know

The new quarter-pound Protein Patties are made from a blend of pea protein, sunflower oil and beets. Much like the Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger, this vegan alternative looks and cooks very much like real meat, minus the beef. It even boast 18 grams of protein per serving thanks to that pea protein base.

“Folks are increasingly going for meatless burgers for all kinds of reasons, but we like to think that one reason in particular is primarily responsible: plant-based burgers have gotten really, really good recently,” Trader Joe’s said in a statement. “Implausible as they may seem. Trader Joe’s Protein Patties are here, and our veggie burger game will never be the same.”

Not near a TJ’s? Look for these vegan burgers at Costco during your next shopping trip.

What’s in the Plant-Based Burgers?

These burgers get their distinctive pink-red coloring from beets, and contain a blend of sunflower oil and seasonings like onion powder to “beef” up the flavor. Trader Joe’s claims these patties will cook and sizzle just like meat, and even stay medium-rare in the center.

For a quick dinner, whip up these easy baked fries to serve with your burgers.

When Can I Get the Burgers?

You don’t have to wait to pick these patties up. As of January 20, the burgers are available in Trader Joe’s locations nationwide for just $4.49. While you’re there, don’t forget to stock up on these shopper-approved picks.
