The Best Vegan Bread You Can Buy at the Grocery Store

The interior of a modern grocery store showcasing the bread aisle with a variety of prepackaged breads available.

You can easily distinguish vegan bread from non-vegan bread by looking carefully at the ingredients. If the list contains honey, eggs, royal jelly, gelatin or dairy-based ingredients like butter, milk, buttermilk, whey or casein, it’s not vegan.

Editor’s Note: You may come across ingredients like mono- and diglycerides and lecithin. Usually, these ingredients are vegan, but not always. To be sure that your product is 100% vegan, you may want to avoid mono- and diglycerides and lecithin altogether.

That being said, we’ve rounded up the tastiest vegan breads—so you won’t have to scan the packaging.

Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Bread

Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Bread

This loaf of bread is made from freshly sprouted, organic grains, organic sprouted lentils and fresh yeast, among other good-for-you ingredients. (See what else is in Ezekiel bread.) It even has more calcium, fiber, iron and protein than the average slice.

Ezekiel bread is a top pick among parents, too. “It is less processed and more nutritious when compared to other bread on the market,” says Tiffany Konecko of Farmulosity. “It has no oils, no sugars, no preservatives and no artificial ingredients.”
