How to Make Vodka Jell-O Shots at Home

Whether you’re tailgating before cheering on your home team or simply want to do something fun at a party, vodka Jell-O shots are an entertaining way to start the celebration. They’re fruity, colorful and straight-up fun to eat (err, drink).

Psst…See what fun things you don’t know about Jell-O!

What vodka should I use for Jell-O shots?

Standard vodka is neutral-tasting, meaning it doesn’t have a flavor. So, when you make Jell-O shots (or any vodka cocktail, for that matter), get creative and use flavored vodka. Here are some fun flavor combinations you can try:

  • Strawberry Lemonade: strawberry Jell-O, lemon vodka
  • Mixed Berry: raspberry Jell-O, blueberry vodka
  • Dreamsicle: orange Jell-O, vanilla vodka
  • Peaches and Cream: peach Jell-O, vanilla vodka
  • Pina Colada: pineapple Jell-O, coconut vodka
  • Key Lime: lime Jell-O, cake vodka

How to Make Vodka Jell-O Shots

The following recipe yields approximately 16 Jell-O shots.

Ingredients

  • 1 Jell-O packet (3 ounces)
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup flavored vodka
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Step 1: Stir

Empty the gelatin packet into a large, heatproof mixing bowl (preferably one with an easy-pour lip, like this one by OXO). Carefully add the boiling water. Whisk together for about two minutes until the gelatin is fully dissolved. Add the vodka and cold water. Stir until all liquids are blended.

Step 2: Set

Carefully pour the mixture into 1-ounce paper cups or plastic containers aligned on a baking sheet. Refrigerate the shots for at least 3 hours (or overnight) until firm.

Step 3: Shoot!

Now for the fun part. Loosen up the Jell-O from the sides of the glass with a spoon or your finger and squeeze the shot into your mouth. Bottoms up!

How much vodka should I use in Jell-O shots?

For just a touch of booze, start with 1/2 cup of vodka for a batch of 16 shots. If you’d like your shots to have a stronger kick, use 3/4 cup of vodka and 1/4 cup of cold water.

For even more fun Jell-O shot recipes, brew up a batch of spiced apple shots or pumpkin pie shots for a Halloween bash!
