The Ultimate Guide to Vegan Pizza

Pizza is a Friday night staple in many households. But what if you have food allergies or are trying a plant-based diet? Don’t worry! We’ll walk you through making a vegan pizza from scratch, the best frozen pizza brands to buy and even how to order a vegan pizza for delivery.

A Note About Vegan Cheese

You can completely forgo cheese and not compromise flavor. However, if you need that melty cheese to complete your pizza, you’re in luck! It’s not hard to find vegan cheese that’s made with soy, nuts or coconut oil.

Find a brand you like and top that pizza to your heart’s desire. Daiya and So Delicious shreds both have great meltability. If you’re looking for vegan Parmesan, try the alternatives from Go Veggie or Violife. A sprinkle of nutritional yeast goes a long way, too!

How to Make Vegan Pizza

Ingredients

  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1-1/4 cup warm water (110° to 115°F)
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3-1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 can (15 ounces) vegan pizza sauce
  • 1-1/2 cups shredded vegan cheese, optional
  • Your choice of toppings

Editor’s Tip: You can also use homemade pizza sauce.

Instructions

Step 1: Form the dough

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes, then add oil and salt. Stir in the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.

Step 2: Knead the dough

On a floured surface, knead dough until a smooth ball forms. This is how to tell if you’re kneading dough the right way. Transfer to a greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.

Step 3: Assemble toppings

As the dough rises, prep and assemble all your pizza toppings. Here are some of the most popular vegan pizza toppings at my house:

  • Artichoke hearts
  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Jackfruit
  • Jalapeno
  • Mushrooms
  • Olives
  • Red onion
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchini

Step 4: Add toppings and bake

Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and divide in half. Transfer each half to a greased 12-in. pizza pan and press into a circle. You don’t want to use a rolling pin for this step, though. Use your hands to stretch the dough instead. (Find more tips for the best-ever homemade pizza.)

Spread the pizza sauce over each crust; top evenly with toppings. Bake at 400°F for 25-30 minutes, until the crust is lightly browned.

Editor’s Tip: You can warm pizza pans in the oven as it preheats. Not preheating your cookware is one of our major pizza mistakes!

Step 5: Slice and serve

Let pizzas cool slightly, then slice. Serve with an equally flavorful vegan salad and enjoy.

5 Best Vegan Pizza Brands to Try at Home

Don’t feel like making your own pizza? Head to the freezer aisle of your grocery store and pick up one of these frozen pizzas. You can upgrade that frozen pizza when you get home, too.

Don’t forget to check labels to ensure the product fits your dietary needs!

Daiya

Most people know Daiya from their cheese alternatives, dairy-free dressings and coconut yogurt. But they also make vegan pizzas (and they’re often on sale—at least at my grocery store!). Daiya’s pizzas have a thin and crispy crust, with super melty cheese. They’re dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free and full of deliciousness.

Amy’s Kitchen

Amy’s has a fairly wide array of vegan products. Compared to Daiya’s thin crust pizza, this one is thicker but still crispy. Amy’s has vegan pizzas with flavors like roasted vegetables, pesto and roasted artichoke, and meatless supreme pizza.

Sweet Earth Enlightened Foods

Sweet Earth’s pizza has a chewy, crispy and flavorful crust with zesty sauces and vibrant plant-based toppings. Yum!

American Flatbread

This pizza is made with homemade tomato sauce, dairy-free cheese, garlic and fresh herbs. American Flatbread pizzas are light and crisp. Note that they have a lineup with 14-plus frozen pizzas but only two are gluten-free and one is vegan.

365 Everyday Value

This Whole Foods brand now offers a personal-size vegan pizza. It’s topped with Daiya cheese, spinach, olives and tomatoes. This pizza is not gluten-free like most of the others, so keep that in mind if you avoid gluten and animal products.

How to Order Vegan Pizza

Hungry for vegan pizza delivery or carry-out? It’s possible! Next time you want to eat out or order in, follow these tips for the best vegan pizza.

Papa John’s

This pizza chain has several “accidentally” vegan options. What they lack in vegan cheese, they make up for with drool-worthy dipping sauces! When placing an order with Papa John’s you have the choice between their original hand tossed dough or pan dough. The pizza, pan and barbecue sauces are all free from dairy. Complete your veggie pizza with toppings like mushrooms, tomatoes and olives. See how Papa John’s fared in our pizza chain taste test.

Blaze Pizza

Their made-to-order approach makes this chain a favorite among vegans. Blaze is great at accommodating special diets, too. They use special markers for the line cooks to reference and try their best to avoid cross-contamination with mandatory glove changes. Both the standard and gluten-free crusts are vegan, along with the classic red, spicy red and barbecue sauces. Pile toppings high with their vegan cheese, basil, bell peppers, kalamata olives, banana peppers and more. Don’t forget to finish it off with one of their many glazes!

Mod Pizza

Mod Pizza is another fast casual pizza chain. Similar to Blaze, you build your pizza as you go. The crust is vegan, they offer dairy-free cheese, and you’re safe with the red sauce, barbecue sauce and garlic rub. Toppings at Mod range from broccoli to sweet hot peppers to pineapple and everything in between! You can also finish it off with a balsamic fig glaze, barbecue swirl or hot Buffalo sauce.

Make sure to request a glove change when ordering pizza and check the allergen menu if you have any questions.
