10 Great Glazes for Your Homemade Doughnuts

Glazed Doughnut Holes

Red or Pink

Give your doughnuts a burst of color by mixing confectioners’ sugar with grape, cranberry, cherry or pomegranate juice concentrate. Whisk together 2 cups confectioners’ sugar with 3 to 5 tablespoons of juice. The more juice you use, the darker the glaze!

Traditional French Cruller Donuts with lemon glaze

Citrus

Use the same recipe for red or pink glaze to give your doughnuts a punch of citrusy flavor. Simply whisk 2 cups confectioners’ sugar with 5 tablespoons of lemon, lime or orange juice. Add a teaspoon or so of the zest to really make this glaze next level.

Maple Glaze for Doughnuts

Maple

This maple-flavored doughnut topping screams fall, but I’d eat them any time of the year! All you need is 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, 3 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and 1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring. Whisk the ingredients together in a small bowl and glaze away!

If you’re feeling wacky, crumble a few pieces of candied bacon on top for a sweet-and-salty treat.

Chocolate Glaze for Doughnuts

Chocolate

Calling all chocoholics! Coat your doughnuts with a rich, chocolaty glaze by bringing 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream and 2 tablespoons light corn syrup to a boil. Kill the heat and pour the mixture over 6 ounces of chopped, semi-sweet chocolate chips. Whisk the chocolate mixture until smooth and finish it off with 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract to give the glaze an aromatic finish.

Gluten-Free Apple Cider Doughnuts

Apple Cider

This is my favorite doughnut glaze to make in the fall when apples are abundant. To get a really concentrated flavor, cook 1 cup apple cider or juice until it reduces down to 3 tablespoons. Mix in 1 tablespoon butter until it’s melted. Then, add 2/3 to 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar, whisking until the mixture becomes thick and glaze-like. (Psst: This recipe makes delicious gluten-free doughnuts!)

Home made cake eclairs

Brown Sugar

Long Johns are famous for their tasty, brown sugar-flavored glaze. It’s deeper and richer than a regular glaze, thanks to the molasses in the brown sugar! To make it, whisk together 1-1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar with 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 tablespoon water, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/8 teaspoon salt.

Glazed Doughnuts

Coffee

Dunking your doughnuts in a coffee glaze is the perfect way to start the morning! Prepare the coffee by combining 6 tablespoons cold milk with 1 tablespoon instant coffee granules and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Then, in a large bowl, beat 3/4 cup softened butter with 6 cups confectioners’ sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt. Gradually add the milk mixture and beat until smooth.

Strawberry glazed donuts with strawberries and coconut

Strawberry

This doughnut not only looks amazing, but it tastes fantastic, too! Whisk together 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar with 1/4 cup mashed fresh strawberries and 1 tablespoon milk (here’s how to keep your strawberries fresh). Crumble up some dried strawberries and sprinkle them on top of the glaze to double down on strawberry flavor.

Homemade Green Tea Matcha Donuts Ready to Eat

Matcha

This bright-green glaze uses powdered matcha, an earthy green tea made popular by Starbucks Green Tea Frappuccino. It’s powerful, so you don’t need much to create a tasty glaze! Combine 2 cups confectioners’ sugar with 2 tablespoons water and 3/4 teaspoon matcha powder.

Two lavender donuts closeup

Lavender

Culinary lavender is a pastry chef’s secret ingredient! It makes incredible cookies, and it’s even better in glaze form. Start by steeping 2 tablespoons culinary lavender in 1/4 cup hot milk. After 5 to 10 minutes, strain out the flowers and whisk the milk with 2 cups confectioners’ sugar. To give the glaze a purplish sheen, add a few drops of blue and red food coloring until you reach the desired color.
