While there are many bad smells to snuff out in your house, there’s one smell, in particular, that’s unbearable to deal with at times: The garbage can! While taking out the trash seems like the obvious solution, it doesn’t fix the stench that is still lurking in the bin after.
Once you give the garbage bin a good clean, the trick is to sprinkle baking soda at the bottom of the bin. Seriously, that’s it!
Psst: Here are 50 more ways baking soda can help you clean your house.
Why does baking soda work?
The baking soda can help absorb those stinky odors in your trash bin. This is due to baking soda’s lower pH levels as a substance. Most bad smells have a higher acidity, making it a higher pH level. However, since baking soda is a mild alkaline substance with a pH 9, it will neutralize the smell from the trash bin.
What do I need to do?
Simply sprinkle in baking soda to cover the bottom of your trash bin. This is before even putting in a bag. If you’re looking for a measurement, about 1/4 cup of baking soda should suffice. You’ll notice a difference in the odor since, well, there won’t be any odor at all. Even when you take the trash out, the smell will be significantly different than what you were dealing with before.
Baking soda is also great for cleaning out your trash can. When it’s time to clean the inside, leave the baking soda in! It will help absorb the moisture and smells of your trash bin, keeping all of those unpleasant aromas out of your kitchen.
Now that the smell is gone, here’s how to clean the rest of your kitchen.
