How to Make an Italian Margarita

We’re all familiar with the classic margarita at our favorite Mexican restaurant. But did you know there’s another margarita cocktail in town?

Meet the Italian margarita. This simple drink combines tequila, Triple Sec, amaretto and sweet-and-sour mix. Served on the rocks, it’s a refreshing change from classic lime margaritas (learn how to make those here). Plus, the drink’s minimal ingredients and easy-to-follow steps make it a perfect choice for parties.

How to Make an Italian Margarita

Yields: 1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz. tequila
  • 1.5 oz. amaretto
  • 1 oz. Triple Sec
  • 4 oz. sweet-and-sour mix
  • Ice

For Garnish

  • 1 lime, lemon or orange
  • Sugar or salt

Step 1: Prepare the Glass

If desired, prep a cocktail glass as you would for a margarita. Start by cutting the citrus fruit into wedges, then rub one wedge around the rim of the glass. Pour sugar or salt onto a shallow surface (such as a plate), then dip the wet rim in the mixture.

Step 2: Mix the Drink

In a cocktail shaker, mix the tequila, amaretto, Triple Sec and sweet-and-sour mix until well combined.

Step 3: Serve and Enjoy

Fill the prepared glass with ice and pour in your mixed drink. Garnish with a citrus wedge, if desired.

What do you pair with an Italian margarita?

Traditional margaritas taste delicious with Mexican food (these are some of our favorite recipes). And on a warm day, there’s not much better than a frosty marg paired with a fresh basket of chips and salsa.

Italian margaritas, on the other hand, taste delicious with Italian food. The nutty amaretto complements a variety of pasta dishes, pizzas or a dessert straight from Nonna’s kitchen. Of course, you can also enjoy the beverage on its own.
