How to Make Homemade Magic Shell

Is there anything more satisfying than cracking the top of a hard chocolatey shell to get to the delicious ice cream underneath? Magic Shell makes ice cream so much better. Fortunately, homemade magic shell is easy to make and pairs perfectly with all your favorite ice cream recipes.

The best part about this version is that it’s done in less than a minute, and any recipe that can get ice cream and chocolate in our bellies that fast is a winner in our book!

How to Make Homemade Magic Shell

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
  • 3 tablespoons evaporated milk
  • Vanilla ice cream

Step 1: Combine the ingredients

Put the chips, butter, and milk in a heavy saucepan. We’re using evaporated milk, which thins out the melted chocolate and allows it to drip down the sides before hardening.

We recommend a nonstick saucepan and silicone utensils like this.

Step 2: Heat over low and stir

Continue stirring until all the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth. Be sure to scrape the bottom of the pan as you stir.

Step 3: Serve warm!

Pour over your Test Kitchen-approved ice cream while the sauce is still warm. Don’t worry—it’ll harden! Top with your favorite ice cream topping, whether that’s sprinkles, cherries or crushed candy.

How to Store Homemade Magic Shell

Once your topping is done, you’ll want to save your leftovers immediately. The sauce will harden when you stop stirring, so be sure to pour your serving over ice cream, then store the rest in an airtight container and put it in the fridge. Simply microwave it in 15-second increments to reheat again.

What Else Can You Use With Homemade Magic Shell?

You don’t have to stop at ice cream! Use homemade magic shell for anything from a fresh batch of sugar cookies to those leftover strawberries in the fruit drawer. Can you think of any day that isn’t improved by chocolate-covered strawberries?
